“Worship in a Time of Plague”

Hammer Baroque, June 11th, 4pm

In the performance style of our popular concerts, “Paradise of Travellers” and “Evelyn’s Diary”, Capella Intima continues its successful collaboration with the Gallery Players of Niagara to present readings, images, and beautiful music from Venice in the 1630s. The music of Heinrich Schutz and the volume of sacred motets published during his visit is featured with his Venetian contemporaries:  Alessandro Grandi, Carlo Milanuzzi, Antonio Cifra, and Claudio Monteverdi. The plague of 1630-1632 inflicted a terrible loss of life in La Serenissima, where a third of the population succumbed to disease. Our programme offers a variety of musical perspectives from those uncertain times:  grief, doubt, faith, and, ultimately, hope.

New Recording Project for Musica Omnia!

June, 2022

Following the success of our Alessandro Scarlatti opera, “Gli equivoci nel sembiante”, a new recording of the music from “Worship in a Time of Plague” will be released in the fall of 2022 on the Boston-based Musica Omnia label. “Early Scarlatti Opera Handsomely Done” was the headline of the rave review in Early Music America Magazine, and we are pleased to continue our collaboration with instrumentalists from the Gallery Players of Niagara (Margaret Gay, Artistic Director).
