The early music vocal quartet Capella Intima was founded in 2009 by Artistic Director and tenor Bud Roach, and specializes in the sacred and secular music for voice of the 17th century. We have consistently produced two to three original programmes each season, often collaborating with other ensembles in the southern Ontario region, including Elixir Baroque, the Toronto Continuo Collective, the Nota Bene Baroque Players, and the Gallery Players of Niagara.
We place a high priority on performing music that is unknown to modern audiences, incorporating readings and projections in our concerts to offer cultural context to the music we perform. “The Paradise of Travellers” included images of Italy from the early Baroque, and readings from English travelers embarking on the Grand Tour, presented with music that would have been heard in Canada for the first time. This programme, along with others such as “Celestial Sirens”, featuring music composed by Milanese nuns, have been performed at the International Bach Festival, the Midtown Concert Series in New York City, the New Hamburg Live Arts Festival, and Open Doors Toronto.
We have created performance editions of several major works, including the oratorio Giuseppe (attr. Luigi Rossi, 1650), the early opera La Dafne (Marco da Gagliano, 1608), and a large portion of the volume of sacred canzonettas published by Rolla in 1657, Milan.
The core singers of Capella Intima—Sheila Dietrich, soprano; Jennifer Enns Modolo, alto; Bud Roach, tenor; David Roth, baritone—maintain active careers on the Canadian concert scene, having appeared frequently with the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, the Toronto Consort, La Chapelle de Quebec and Les Violons du Roy, the Hamilton Philharmonic, Symphonia London, and the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra, the Bach Elgar Choir, the Spiritus Ensemble, and many others.
Capella Intima serves as the Ensemble in Residence at the Hammer Baroque concert series in Hamilton, where admission is open to all by donation. Our growing discography for the Musica Omnia label includes has achieved international acclaim. With consistent support from the Ontario Arts Council, the City of Hamilton Enrichment Fund, and the Canada Council for the Arts, we look forward to many more concerts and recording opportunities.
